A Chief AI Officer, for the price of a part of one.
A fractional Chief AI Officer owns how AI changes your whole business: where it is used, the rules for using it, which vendors you pay, how your people's work changes, and whether it pays back. Inside your company, not commenting from outside. For an SME that is not ready for a full-time hire.
What a CAIO owns that a CTO does not
A CTO owns the product and the platform. A CAIO owns what AI does to the rest of the business.
Chief AI Officer
- AI adoption across the whole business, not just the product
- Decision rights: who can buy, build or switch on an AI tool
- The AI policy: approved tools, data boundaries, human review
- Vendor choice, and saying no to tools you do not need
- Workforce change: which jobs change, and training people for it
- Measuring return, so every AI cost has an owner and a number
CTO
- The product and what gets built next
- The platform: architecture, security, uptime
- The engineering team and how it ships
- The AI-native SDLC: how AI-written code is specified and reviewed
Which seat do you need first?
It depends on what you are changing.
- You are building an AI product.Forward Deployed CTOThe hard decisions are about the product and the platform.
- You are putting AI into how the business runs.Fractional CAIOThe hard decisions are about people, policy, vendors and return.

Full-time CAIO
- Pay: $266K–$497K a year in total pay (Glassdoor), or $300K–$400K target cash plus equity at a startup (JRG Partners).
- A search fee of 25–33% of first-year cash pay, if you use a retained search firm.
- 12–16+ weeks to hire, and then time for the new hire to get up to speed.
- Not in those figures: benefits, payroll taxes and the equity itself.
Fractional CAIO
- A monthly fee: $7,800–$13,000 is the middle of the US market (Go Fractional).
- No retained executive search.
- Part of a week, not a full one. Enough for most SMEs, not for every company.
- A contractor fee, so it is not a like-for-like match with salary.
Our calculation
These are our sums on the figures above, not numbers any source published.
- Fractional, a year: $7,800–$13,000 × 12 = $93,600–$156,000. That is about 26–44% of Glassdoor's $355K median total pay for a full-time CAIO. At Go Fractional's average rate ($205 an hour for about 13 hours a week, about $10,600 a month) it is roughly 36%, or about a third.
- Ours, a year: $4,000–$8,000 × 12 = $48,000–$96,000. That is about 14–27% of Glassdoor's $355K median, and our monthly range sits below Go Fractional's $7,800–$13,000 market middle.
- Search fee, one-off: 25–33% × $300K–$400K (JRG's startup target cash) ≈ $75K–$132K.
- The full-time side leaves out benefits, payroll taxes and equity, which would widen the gap.
Read these with care
- Sources disagree by more than 2x. ZipRecruiter estimates a US CAIO salary at about $151K, less than half of Glassdoor's figure.
- Samples are small: 7 salaries on Glassdoor, 5 job posts behind the fractional rate. Several sources are search firms or marketplaces describing their own market.
- It is US data, in US dollars. We found no CAIO figures for the UK, the EU or India that were reliable enough to publish.
- Time to hire is the search alone. For all US executive roles, SHRM, 2025 Recruiting Executives Benchmarking puts the median at about a month and a half; C-suite searches take longer.
Context: 76% of organisations surveyed by IBM had a Chief AI Officer in 2026, up from 26% a year earlier (IBM Institute for Business Value, 2026 CEO Study, May 2026). Large-enterprise data: 2,000 CEOs, mostly of large companies. It does not mean 76% of SMEs have one. Most SMEs cannot justify a full-time one, which is the case for a fractional seat.
Our range: $4,000–$8,000 a month. The exact figure depends on the scope, and we fix it after the free call.
